Towards better ...

Well, that was interesting. Tragic. Heartbreaking. Painful. Difficult.

Have more people ever been happier to see a year go away? Our attitude doesn’t have to be driven by the outside world, but most times it is. The outside world provokes, persists and insists on changing the story we choose to tell ourselves.

And one reason we invented the calendar was to keep the outside world at bay as we keep track of promises and so decide what to do next, –to respond politely instead of to react without thought.

For those of you keeping track, 2021 is the product of the prime numbers 43 and 47. If you were looking for a reason to be optimistic, that’s as good as any.

I remain convinced that this pandemic will end in 2021 — we will win, but life after victory will not be a simple resumption of life as it was. Big cities, big crowds, restaurants, and bars will be much less a part of life than before. Now that businesses have figured out how to decentralise, they'll stay that way; nobody will want to keep paying big city rents.

Thanks to family, relatives and friends for caring!

Agile in kürzform

Ich verstehe heute besser, was Agilität in der Programmierung

bedeutet, und zwar mache ich das seit Beginn meiner Programmierkarriere. Bring etwas zum Laufen, probier es aus, lern' etwas daraus, geh' vielleicht in eine andere Richtung, aber prüf' ständig wie es beim Benutzer ankommt und ändere entsprechend. "Listen to your users".

Prof. Anton Frick, von dem ich Anfang der 80er Jahre bei Hengstler Gleitzeit viel gelernt habe, hat auf diese Weise gearbeitet. Ich habe PersInfo DOS nach diesen Prinzipien erstellt. Alles, was perbit in den Jahren 1983-1996 entwickelt hat, wurde auf diese Weise entwickelt. Jetzt, da ich besser verstehe was Agilität eigentlich ist, könnte ich alle Bücher und die gesamten Artikel die es darüber gibt, in ein paar Worte fassen, die den Unterschied erklären.

Ich habe in Dublin auf eine Anti-Agile-Entwicklung in einem Unternehmen gestoßen, in dem die Software mithilfe von schriftliche Spezifikationen entwickelt wurde. Die Philosophie war, das Ganze von vornherein zu entwerfen und Teile des Projekts an verschiedene Gruppen von Programmierern weiterzugeben, die nie die vollständige Spezifikation sahen, sodass niemand wusste richtig, woran sie arbeiteten. Das Unternehmen ging sehr schnell Pleite. Die Programmierer bildete den Kern eines anderen Unternehmens, das ebenfalls seine Geschäftstätigkeit aufgab, jedes Mal, weil das Produkt die Kundenerwartungen weit verfehlt hat.

Liebe Hilde,

vielen herzlichen Dank für die letzten 30 Jahre enge Freundschaft

und erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit. Was für ein Glück für perbit und mich damals in der Wernerstraße im sonnigen Herbst 1990 als Andrea dich zu uns gebracht hat. Es wäre kaum möglich hier alle Interessen auflisten, die Hilde und ich teilen. In den ersten Jahren entdeckten wir, dass wir beide Mathe und Zahlen lieben. So gesehen dachte ich, ich würde ein paar Zahlen teilen, die sich auf das 30-jährige Jubiläum beziehen - und auf unsere Freundschaft.

• 15,8: Anzahl der Jahre, die Hilde in ihrem Leben geschlafen hat (vorausgesetzt sie bekommt 8 Stunden pro Nacht).

• 10.958: Tage seit unserem ersten Treffen am 24. September 1990.

• 251 PersInfo-3 und 885 Views/Insight Kundensysteme generiert.

• 5: Telefonnummern, die ich in meinem Büro auf Kurzwahl habe – June, Stephen, Silke, Wolfgang und Hilde.

• Unberechenbar: Die positive Auswirkung, die Hilde auf die Firma perbit bis heute hatte.

Eine der vielen Eigenschaften von Hilde ist ihr unerschütterliches Gefühl für richtig und falsch. Dies ist eine Eigenschaft, die sie sicherlich von Kind auf von ihr Familie erhalten hat.  Ehrlichkeit, Zuverlässigkeit, Intelligenz, Ausdauer und Bescheidenheit sind weitere wichtige Eigenschaften die sie auszeichnet. Parallel zu ihr Studium gab es für Hilde damals bei perbit nur „learning by doing“. DOS, Pers-Info, Windows, Superbase und PersInfo-3 waren die berufliche Herausforderungen der 90‘er, den klugen Umgang mit Kunden und Programmierer auch. Es war für mich persönlich und sicher auch für alle anderen in Trossingen und Altenberge sehr schön zu erleben wie schnell sie diese neuen technischen Aufgaben eine nach der anderen spielend meisterte.

Nichts bleibt wie es ist und wie schon mit MS-DOS und Wordstar so ging es auch mit PersInfo-3 und Superbase. Die Welt wollte Client-Server und wir stellten 2001 auf perbit Views und später Insight um. Es änderte sich fortan nicht nur Generierung und Bedienerführung, viele andere Komponenten würden schritt für schritt komplexer, umfangreicher und farbvoller. Windows XP, Vista, Visual Basic, SQL-Server, Oracle, Internet Explorer, KISS, usw. Nichts blieb stehen, aus morgen würde heute, aus heute gestern ---

Wir lernen uns kennen, arbeiten zusammen, bestreiten manche neue Wege, besprechen Probleme und treffen Entscheidungen, tauschen Wünsche und Hoffnungen aus. Du erlebtest zusammen mit Wolfgang und mir wie perbit im Laufe der Zeit von 7 auf mehr als 90 Mitarbeiter gewachsen ist. 

Die folgenden Zeilen habe ich 2011 für Johanna zum 20-jährigen geschrieben, aber sie gelten heute umso mehr für Dich als Niederlassungsleiterin: 

Dreißig Jahre Generierung mit Begeisterung ist für Dich nur Halbzeit, hoffe ich. Alle Prognosen nach wird die Zukunft der Software durch das Internet, Google, Amazon, Facebook usw. noch schneller, interessanter und abwechslungsreicher als je zuvor. Die Industriezeitalter und die damit verbunden Fabrikdenkweise haben ausgedient und können künftig nicht mehr für Wachstum sorgen. Es wird schwierig werden für diejenigen unter uns die am liebsten relative stabil „einfach so weitermachen wollen“. Ich bin aber nicht pessimistisch weil diese neue Revolution der Cloud-Vernetzung vielerlei neue Möglichkeiten mit sich bringen wird. Allerdings nicht für wiederholende fabrikähnliche Tätigkeiten. Jeder von uns, ausgestattet mit einem Laptop und Internetanschluss ist jetzt schon ein Fabrikbesitzer. Wir sind somit im Stande ständig miteinander in engen Kontakt zu bleiben, Ideen und Arbeitsergebnisse auszutauschen, Arbeit mit Resourcen zu verbinden und daraus aus eigener Kraft Mehrwert zu liefern. Grenzenlos. Obwohl Programmierer eher Handwerker als Künstler sind, wird für die fähigen von uns in den kommenden Jahren die Arbeit bestimmt nicht ausgehen und so hoffe ich, deine Begeisterung dafür auch nicht.

Von all den Dingen, die ich von Wolfgang gelernt habe, könnte das Wichtigste sein, worum es im Leben bei Freundschaft geht. Ganz am Anfang sagte er zu mir, als wir über die Themen Einstellungen und Umgang mit Kollegen sprachen:

„Du wirst dich in Richtung der Menschen bewegen, mit denen Du beruflich in Verbindung stehst. Es ist daher wichtig, mit Menschen zusammenzuarbeiten, die besser sind als Du. Die Freunde, die Du hast, werden dich formen als Du durch das Leben gehst. Finde gute Freunde und behalte sie für den Rest deines Lebens, aber lass sie Menschen sein, die du sowohl bewunderst als auch magst.“

Eine Person, die ich sowohl bewundere als auch mag - das ist die perfekte Beschreibung meiner Einstellung zu Dir, liebe Hilde.

Rembering better days and Jim Fixx

Ran a slow 10K (58 Minutes) early yesterday and passed the time thinking back on better days (38 Minutes). Jim Fixx came to mind, in 1977 he wrote the bestseller "The Complete Book of Running" and in 1978 I took up jogging. Unfortunately and surprisingly he died of a heart attack in 1984, the year of my first marathon in the Black Forest. 

To read his book now is to see how much he foresaw. Some parts are dated. But much of it reads as visionary. Cut out white flour and sugar? Practice self-care? Find a flow state? Exercise regularly, even for short amounts of time, to live better and longer? It’s like reading 20 years of modern studies 40 years before the fact.

Fixx wrote about the barefoot-running Tarahumara decades before Born to Run.

His homemade mileage counter was basically an early Fitbit. He was right on the big points too. A Stanford study later found jogging is effective in increasing lifespan and mitigating the effects of aging. Running can help ward off all manner of diseases—including lowering the risk of lung, prostate and colon cancer. 

And, in a study the printed this year, “among a generally healthy but sedentary group of adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s, working out lowers levels of depression, hostility and other negative feelings.”

Then, suddenly again, Christopher Robin, who was still looking at the world with his chin in his hands, called out “Pooh!”

Bored?

If you’re under 14: “Good.” It’s good that you’re feeling bored.
Bored is an actual feeling.

Bored can prompt forward motion. Bored is the thing that happens before you choose to entertain yourself. Bored is what empty space feels like, and you can use that empty space to go do something important. Bored means that you’re paying attention (no one is bored when they’re asleep.)

If you’re over 14: “It’s up to you.”

As soon as you’re tired of being bored at work, at home, on lockdown, wherever, you’ll go find a challenge. You don’t have to quit your day job to be challenged, but you do have to be willing to leap, to take some responsibility, to find something that might not work.

Being challenged at work is a privilege. It means that you have a chance, while being paid, to grow. It means you can choose to matter.

I’m glad you’re feeling bored, and now we’re excited to see what you’re going to go do about it.

Social distancing

“Social distancing,” yes indeed. It’s basically what June and I consider ordinary life. We’re retired, we’re home a lot, and don’t have the energy to cope with huge events like concerts, parades, sport events and so on. We don’t go to pubs. 

So we’re doing our part by basically keeping on keeping on. I’m working on techniques to avoid using my hands as much in public places. If I’m going through a door that simply pushes open, I push with my shoulder.  After I wash my hands in the gents, I dry them on a paper towel and then grip the door handle through the towel. I’m all for flattening the pandemic curve. What I don’t think is a good idea is flattening the economy. More here about this from David McWilliams.

So we’re wandering around the living room or the garden, reading, writing, working in the garden, pulling weeds, and so on. Life continues.

Best TV Series 2012-2020

Last Tango in Halifax is pretty much the perfect family series. Beginning in 2012 Series 5 came on the iPlayer in February this year. It's based on lead writer Sally Wainwright's personal experiences. She described it as "the most personal thing I've ever written". Her mother, Dorothy, lost contact with a childhood friend, Alec Walker, when she was 15, but they reconnected on the social networking website Friends Reunited 60 years later and within six months were married. Alan and Celia's romance is depicted alongside the troubles of their own grown-up daughters, and the series' official description says that its portrayal of family is "as dark as it is comic". There’s real beauty in seeing amazing characters depicted by equally amazing actors in a real life setting. 

Discussing the casting of Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, Wainwright stated: "we went for the best and we got them". Great stuff indeed.

Triple Crown 2020

A great chance unfortunately missed. Scotland and Wales already beaten but no luck for Ireland last Sunday in Twickenham. 



Once again England better in every respect on the day!

Keep on Dancing..

Joyce will be 13 this Friday, that got me thinking back to Silke at that age and remembering .....

Leaving home for the first time (shrouded by fog), being off balance and wondering which direction to go (middle of the street on the double yellow lines), letting go of our childish ways (playground), growing in the sunshine (the garden), first love then lit by sunlight (forbidden forest), first real boyfriend and dancing into the future with optimism, idealism and hope.

(The video was made by fans and the Harrison estate selected the best of the entries. This was the one that won. Doesn't get much better than this down memory lane even if the hair colour is wrong and the dancing is not quite as good as Silke's in those days.)

72 this year

72 two weeks ago—and glad of it. Why regret getting older? I remember being young, ha! There are lessons to be taken from living so many years. Let me mention a few here:

• The cost of youth is ignorance; you know less than you think you do.
• The cost of wisdom is pain; there comes a point where you know more than you want to.
• Nothing is ever as simple as it first appears to be.
• Certainty is one of the great sins.

I could add a few, but what I might add (for example, things like God exists and cynicism is cowardice) are not so much lessons learned as personal convictions founded in faith. I remember Rev. Robin Armstrong in St. Canices, Finglas very well.

Thinking back on those days brought back a surprise memory of the Monkees, one of the most underrated groups of the sixties and a Youtube search revealed:

It was perhaps one of the best lyrics (Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil) 60's pop music produced. When the world (and I) were young, things were simple. The older I got, the more I realised that there were no simple answers to any difficult question, and sometimes no answers at all. Now there are only shades of gray. Nothing is simple, and nothing is certain. If you can't accept this, maybe you're still too young. Give it time. It worked for me.

Rugby, Six Nations

2020 - 1st February in Dublin: Ireland 19 Scotland 12, off to a good start this season.

And for the first time the Six Nations is powered by AWS.

First played in 1883 as the Home Nations Championship among England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, with the inclusion of France in 1910 and Italy in 2000, the Six Nations Championship is among the oldest surviving rugby traditions and is one of the best attended sporting events in the world. Working with AWS and its partner Stats Perform, Six Nations is adopting new technologies that will help fans better understand the complexities and nuances of decisions made on and off the pitch.
