Triple Crown 2020

A great chance unfortunately missed. Scotland and Wales already beaten but no luck for Ireland last Sunday in Twickenham.

Once again England better in every respect on the day!

300 Seconds

How many decisions or commitments would end up more positively if you had a five-minute snooze button on hand?

The hasty one-liner, the rushed reaction, the action we end up regretting--all of them can be eliminated with judicious use of the snooze button. It's a shame there isn't one built in to our computers when we're communicating online...

When in doubt, go for a walk around the block.

Empty Happy Brain

69

and 46 years married today ! Another notch on the milepost of life. The years are passing so quickly that it really is quite scary.

It seems like no time ago since I left full time work, but that was over five years ago. I have been a pensioner now for four years.

How many times have I seen a report in the papers where some old goat was involved in an accident, where his age was given as 70 and my immediate thought was that he was too old to drive anyway?

I’m not 70.  I’m not sure quite what I am, but it’s somewhere in my thirties.  No older than that anyway.

It really is time I decided what I really want to be when I grow up?

What Programmers really mean...

“It’s a non-trivial amount of work” = I won’t be able to copy and paste
“This is a temporary solution” = This is a permanent solution
“I’ll be finished by Monday” = I won’t tell you which Monday
“Do you want it done fast or do you want it done right?” = It will be neither
“Just report a bug” = I have no idea what you’re saying right now
“We can’t test that” = We can but we won’t
“I fixed the bug” = It started working again and I have no idea why
“I can’t realistically estimate that” = I don’t know how estimates work
“I don’t think users will care about that” = I have dinner reservations at 8
“This is an Alpha release” = It doesn’t work
-Thanks to Murphy.

Not many saw Pokemon coming..

Marc Benioff posted something on Twitter that's worth quoting.

"No one I know predicted the @Pokemon/AR phenomena. That's what I love about our industry: You never know what's next."

That's right!

That's like something I used to say as the web was first taking root in 1996. None of the titans of the software industry saw it coming. They're never as smart as they imagine they are.

Christmas Day

Christmas came, and we enjoyed just being at home together in Trossingen. All six of us (June, Stephen, Silke Marlon, Joyce and I) got the presents we wanted and had a late turkey dinner after a walk in the woods. Joyce got new Star Wars figures to go with Stephen's old ones, amongst many other things, even STAR WARS Monopoly which she went on to win in the evening. Poppy kept a watchful eye out for Coco. We had a good Christmas.

After Christmas, Steve, Marlon and Silke went to see the new Star Wars movie. A week long break for me but there's still a lot to be done, and soon I'll be back to doing it. Maybe even writing that book!

Kreativität nach Rilke

"Creating a life that reflects your values and satisfies your soul is a rare achievement.
In a culture that relentlessly promotes avarice and excess as the good life, a person happy doing his own work is usually considered an eccentric, if not a subversive. Ambition is only understood if it’s to rise to the top of some imaginary ladder of success. Someone who takes an undemanding job because it affords him the time to pursue other interests and activities is considered a flake. A person who abandons a career in order to stay home and raise children is considered not to be living up to his potential — as if a job title and salary are the sole measure of human worth. You’ll be told in a hundred ways, some subtle and some not, to keep climbing, and never be satisfied with where you are, who you are, and what you’re doing. There are a million ways to sell yourself out, and I guarantee you’ll hear about them. To invent your own life’s meaning is not easy, but it’s still allowed, and I think you’ll be happier for the trouble."
-Bill Watterson, 1990.

He concludes by echoing Rilke:
"Your preparation for the real world is not in the answers you’ve learned, but in the questions you’ve learned how to ask yourself."
