Zooropa, U2 and the "Loss Trilogy"

I also believe that, intentional or not, U2 make trilogies of albums. These are the trilogies they've created, and what the parts of the trilogies represent:

The Growth Trilogy
Boy - growth of self
October - growth of faith
War - growth of purpose

The America Trilogy
The Unforgettable Fire - America from a distance
The Joshua Tree - America up close
Rattle And Hum - Inside America

The Loss Trilogy
Achtung Baby - loss of love
Zooropa - loss of purpose
Pop - loss of faith

The Acceptance Trilogy
All That You Can't Leave Behind - acceptance of mortality
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - acceptance of adulthood
No Line On The Horizon - acceptance of place

Zooropa shows up in U2 concerts when the band need either utter sincerity or utter chaos. "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" arrives when the band needs a sincere, heartfelt song in the middle of an acoustic part of a concert. U2 performed "The Wanderer" only once live, when they wanted to pay deep tribute to Johnny Cash in his hometown of Nashville. "Zooropa" showed up as a chaotic tornado of light during the 360 tour, and again during the Innocence + Experience tour to communicate the horror and desperation refugees felt as they traveled to Europe. Zooropa is an album of emotional extremes. It is not anger and peace, nor love and hate. It is fear and hope, adoration and being lost, the calling cards of U2's best work.

Johnny Cash at the end imitates the voice of God, with all his confusing wisdom and conflicting instructions. He sets out goals that can never be achieved, a sanctified purpose with a bible and a gun, all in one song. We see him here getting frustrated and old because the world isn't still innocent.

Wat haste jemacht mit dein’ Leben?

Am 16. August 1956, so lese ich im Filmlexikon, wurde in Köln  „Der Hauptmann von Köpenick“ mit Heinz Rühmann in der Hauptrolle uraufgeführt. Ich bleibe deshalb daran hängen, weil für mich in diesem Film eine der besten schauspielerischen Leistungen geboten wird, die ich aus dem Kino kenne.

Der Schuster Wilhelm Voigt ist nach seiner Haft bei seiner Schwester und deren Mann Friedrich untergekommen.  Nachdem er von einer Beerdigung zurück ist, sinniert er mit seinem Schwager über das Leben und sagt:

 „Und denn, denn stehste vor Gott, dem Vater, ….und der fragt dir, ins Jesichte: Willem Voigt, wat haste jemacht mit deine‘ Leben. Und da muss ick sagen: Fußmatten, muss ick sagen, die hab ick jeflochten im Jefängnis. …. Det sachste vor Gott, Mensch. Aber der sacht zu dir: Jeh weck, sacht er! Ausweisung! Sacht er. Dafür hab ick dir det Leben nicht jeschenkt! Sacht er. Det biste mir schuldig. Wo is et? Wat haste mit jemacht?“

Ich habe diese Szene schon oft gesehen. Rühmann spielt sie so intensiv, dass ich bis heute immer einen Kloß im Hals verspüre und am liebsten in den Film hinein klettern möchte um den kleinen Mann an den Schultern zu packen und zu sagen: „ Nee Willem Voigt, so ist Gott nicht. Der gibt dir deine Chance, auch wenn dein Leben bis heute völlig verkorkst verlaufen sein sollte. Der lässt dich nicht fallen, du hast die Chance auf deine Aufenthaltserlaubnis.“

Ja ich weiß, dass das reine Glaubenssache ist. Und die Bibel hat zahlreiche Belege für den strafenden und richtenden Gott, aber genauso auch für den verzeihenden und gütigen. Von einer Grundüberzeugung komme ich nicht los: vor Gott ist der Mensch mehr wert als die Summe seiner Leistungen. Und wenn ich davon ausgehen kann, dann fällt es mir leichter, mein Leben in die Hand zu nehmen und etwas daraus zu machen. Davon entbindet mich nämlich auch der Glaube an den gütigen Gott nicht, den Vater, der den verlorenen Sohn in den Arm nimmt und wieder in sein Haus führt.

Wilhelm Voigt verlässt das Haus seines Schwagers mit den Worten: „So knickerig werd ich nicht vor meinen Schöpfer treten. Ick werd noch wat machen mit meim’ Leben…“
Ist vielleicht auch gar kein so schlechtes Motto für uns all, jeden Tag.

and thank you Ali, Candida and Cynthia. The Innocence & Experience show in Cologne was the best stage show I’ve seen since Pop in Mannheim in 1997. The story told is part of my life story too, just amazing to see it presented this way.

Yes, the new music is autobiography. Yes, that may be self indulgent, but no more so than any biography or memoir. All we have is our stories and our lives, our experiences. And that's what this show is about? Growing up in Finglas as it was in the 1970's. It was the same in the 60's. I just loved it.

Acrobat revived

On holiday in Dublin over Easter Marlon asked me what my favourite U2 song was. There are so many it took me a while to sort them in my mind but after mentioning Bad as an all-time favourite for many years -especially live, and then leaving out songs specific to a particular year or special occasion ("Stay" in Cologne 2001, "Streets" in Mannheim in the rain 1997 and the version with the introduction von Hamish Hamilton on the 2001 Elevation DVD, or "Kite" while driving under a full moon on an October night to collect Steve from the train in Rottweil... I could go on!) I said Acrobat. He immediately played it on his iPhone and wasn't too impressed by my choice. However, not only has it a great instrumental part, the lyrics manage to juggle 3 parallel meanings: the disgrace of Ireland and IRA; a woman, her falling apart and rise from that; and the hypocrisy in each of us. So once again for Marlon, here it is the way I've heard it in my head for years. Results from the worldwide #U2Request campaign are in, and U2 fans on Twitter have voted "Acrobat" as the U2 song they most want to hear during the upcoming Innocence + Experience tour. The event, organized by Italian fan Angelo D'Arezzo, took place on April 14 with fans naming a song they want to hear.

The results? No surprise, really. "Acrobat" was the top vote-getter by a landslide, with almost three times as many votes as the No. 2 song, "A Sort Of Homecoming," and more votes than the next three songs combined.

Happy Birthday Jack Kerouac!

Geboren am 12.03.1922, Jack Kerouac's sportliche Erfolge brachten ihm 1940 bis 1941 ein Stipendium an der Columbia University in New York ein, wo er zusammen mit Kommilitonen wie Allen Ginsberg und William S. Burroughs die Zelle der Beat Generation bildete.

On The Road (1957), auf deutsch Unterwegs war Kerouac's Durchbruch und der Höhepunkt seiner Karriere. Auch in Januar 1957 schrieb Kerouac eine bewegende Brief an seine Ex-Frau Edie, indem stand:

"I have lots of things to teach you now, in case we ever meet, concerning the message that was transmitted to me under a pine tree in North Carolina on a cold winter moonlit night. It said that Nothing Ever Happened, so don’t worry. It’s all like a dream. Everything is ecstasy, inside. We just don’t know it because of our thinking-minds. But in our true blissful essence of mind is known that everything is alright forever and forever and forever. Close your eyes, let your hands and nerve-ends drop, stop breathing for 3 seconds, listen to the silence inside the illusion of the world, and you will remember the lesson you forgot, which was taught in immense milky way soft cloud innumerable worlds long ago and not even at all. It is all one vast awakened thing. I call it the golden eternity. It is perfect. We were never really born, we will never really die."

Der international renommierte Künstler R.O.Schabbach überrascht in diesem Sommer mit einem Event-Highlight der Extraklasse. Ganz getreu dem Satz seines künstlerischen Übervaters und Mentors Joseph Beuys folgend: "Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler", wird es den Teilnehmern der Veranstaltung möglich sein, selbst als Bestandteil der Skulptur mitzuwirken und darüber hinaus Bilder und Bildfragmente von einzigartiger Farbigkeit spielerisch-experimentell in der Dunkelheit der Nacht von anscheinend unsichtbarer Hand immer wieder neu entstehen zu lassen, -6000 Kubikmeter Lichtdom.
