Going Home

What are you doing for Easter?’ asked a friend today.

‘Going home,’ I said.

But what does ‘going home’ mean? It seems a phrase full of  possible meanings.

‘We’re going home’, was what the hero would declare at the end of films in boyhood days, before the credits began to roll on the black and white television screen.

There would be a shot of weary but victorious men heading back to wives and families.

‘You’re going home’, is a word of reassurance, a statement that all will be well, that there is no need to worry, that others will now deal with whatever must be done.

The thought of going home brings thoughts of security, of rest, of problems resolved, of petty annoyances being set aside. Going home is a thought to bring a moment of peace.

But where is home? Is it perhaps the place in which we spent our childhood years? But what if everyone we knew has long since gone? Is it the place where we have lived for most of our life?

What if we have moved house frequently, with long distances between each place? Is it the place where we find our family?

What if our loved ones are scattered across various locations, perhaps even in different countries?

‘Home is where the heart is’ was often heard growing up in Finglas. What did it mean? Your heart might be in many places, or in no place at all, did that mean you had many homes, or no home at all? It did not really make sense, even in those times.

Short of making the final journey, what does ‘going home’ mean when there is no place we might call home?

Is ‘home’ an aspiration? Is it hoping for the sort of place where people might gather in Christmas movies?

Is it a collection of images that includes barbecues on summer evenings, and well- kept gardens, and kindly neighbours, and close knit communities, and family members coming back on surprise visits? One can hardly conjure such a home from nothing.

Perhaps, for those of us who have lived far away fron their first home, ‘home’ is like retirement, something that will only be recognized when we arrive there.

Forgotten Books

I was clearing out the cellar in the office the other day, and noticed two boxes of books that I read years ago and in the meantime  forgotten.

Each book was written, perhaps over the course of a year (or a decade), by a smart, passionate person with something to share. All of that focus and insight, generously shared with anyone who wants to take the time.

It reminded me of how much is out there, just waiting for us to explore and understand. We have a chance to learn and move forward if we care to.

George Harrison: The Experience

November is a time for remembering and by chance I came upon this old interview with George Harrison, the quiet Beatle. It's impressive, with some good photos of the Beatles in the sixties before he connected to the Indian philosophies and became deeply spiritual, misunderstood and ahead of his time.

"The purpose of life is to find out "Who am I?" "Why am I here?" and "Where am I going?"

His basic message - nothing lasts. All flows, nothing lasts. Not your enemies, not your fortune, not who you sleep with at night, not the books, not the house in Marbella, -nothing lasts. To the degree that you avert your gaze from this truth, you build the potential for pain into your life. Everything worthwhile is the act of embracing the present moment, and then moving on to the next moment of experience.

All that you can't leave behind..

Twenty years from now, you will have new skills. New customers. A new title and a new kind of leverage. All of this forward motion requires a less celebrated element–all the things you’re not doing any longer.

To get a new job, you’ll need to leave the old job behind.

When you have a child, you’ve started a process that leads to an adult…

Often, we try to pretend that growth comes with no goodbyes, but it does.

Perhaps we can go in with our eyes open, understanding that what we begin will someday be left behind.

1991-2001-2011-2021

 Liebe Johanna,

Richard.

Was gibt's Neues?

Slow down

"When things are going sweetly and peacefully, please pause a moment, and then say out loud: 'If this isn't nice, what is?'" - Kurt Vonnegut, 1998

Life moves fast. Slow down, pause, and appreciate moments of sweetness.

You'll be glad you did.

Towards better ...

Well, that was interesting. Tragic. Heartbreaking. Painful. Difficult.

Have more people ever been happier to see a year go away? Our attitude doesn’t have to be driven by the outside world, but most times it is. The outside world provokes, persists and insists on changing the story we choose to tell ourselves.

And one reason we invented the calendar was to keep the outside world at bay as we keep track of promises and so decide what to do next, –to respond politely instead of to react without thought.

For those of you keeping track, 2021 is the product of the prime numbers 43 and 47. If you were looking for a reason to be optimistic, that’s as good as any.

I remain convinced that this pandemic will end in 2021 — we will win, but life after victory will not be a simple resumption of life as it was. Big cities, big crowds, restaurants, and bars will be much less a part of life than before. Now that businesses have figured out how to decentralise, they'll stay that way; nobody will want to keep paying big city rents.

Thanks to family, relatives and friends for caring!

Here’s to health, justice and peace of mind as we choose an attitude of possibility and resilience for 2021.

Agile in kürzform

"Listen to your users".

Walk On revisited

I must have listened to this song a hundred times in October 2000. I just love the start here when Bono and Co. "Walk on".

Great song, great video! (Liz Friedlander directed in 2001.)

2020 - 2010- 2000-1990

perbit, 24. September 2020.

Liebe Hilde,

A new normal

If you went back to 1820 or even 1966, all the sudden changes would surprise you. And the same is true for someone who came forward to today.

We’ve got a deep-seated desire for things to go back to normal, the way we were used to. But this, this moment of ours is now normal.
For now. And later there will be another normal.

There is no “the new normal”.
There’s simply the normal of now.

A new normal. This too shall pass.

Father and Daughter

Remote Work

"Chance meetings are especially important in causing new things to happen. But what organization measures that? No one measures progress till there is a project to measure the progress of."

Rembering better days and Jim Fixx

Ran a slow 10K (58 Minutes) early yesterday and passed the time thinking back on better days (38 Minutes). Jim Fixx came to mind, in 1977 he wrote the bestseller "The Complete Book of Running" and in 1978 I took up jogging. Unfortunately and surprisingly he died of a heart attack in 1984, the year of my first marathon in the Black Forest.

To read his book now is to see how much he foresaw. Some parts are dated. But much of it reads as visionary. Cut out white flour and sugar? Practice self-care? Find a flow state? Exercise regularly, even for short amounts of time, to live better and longer? It’s like reading 20 years of modern studies 40 years before the fact.
Fixx wrote about the barefoot-running Tarahumara decades before Born to Run.

His homemade mileage counter was basically an early Fitbit. He was right on the big points too. A Stanford study later found jogging is effective in increasing lifespan and mitigating the effects of aging. Running can help ward off all manner of diseases—including lowering the risk of lung, prostate and colon cancer.

And, in a study the printed this year, “among a generally healthy but sedentary group of adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s, working out lowers levels of depression, hostility and other negative feelings.”

Wherever I go ...

For Joyce basically, now approaching 14 and growing up too fast.

The final words from A.A. Milne’s stories of Winnie the Pooh. The anguish of Christopher Robin as he tries to explain his going away and the incomprehension of poor Pooh are beautifully human.

Then, suddenly again, Christopher Robin, who was still looking at the world with his chin in his hands, called out “Pooh!”

“Yes?” said Pooh.
“When I’m – when – Pooh!”
“Yes, Christopher Robin?”
“I’m not going to do Nothing any more.”
“Never again?”
“Well, not so much. They don’t let you.”

Pooh waited for him to go on, but he was silent again.
“Yes, Christopher Robin?” said Pooh helpfully.
“Pooh, when I’m – you know – when I’m not doing Nothing, will you come up here sometimes?”
“Just Me?”
“Yes, Pooh.”
“Will you be here too?”
“Yes, Pooh, I will be really. I promise I will be, Pooh.”
“That’s good,” said Pooh.
“Pooh, promise you won’t forget about me, ever. Not even when I’m a hundred.”
Pooh thought for a little.
“How old shall I be then?”
“Ninety-nine.”

Pooh nodded.
“I promise,” he said.

Still with his eyes on the world Christopher Robin put out a hand and felt for Pooh’s paw.
“Pooh,” said Christopher Robin earnestly, “if I – if I’m not quite” he stopped and tried again – “. Pooh, whatever happens, you will understand, won’t you?”
“Understand what?”

“Oh, nothing.” He laughed and jumped to his feet. “Come on!”

“Where?” said Pooh.

“Anywhere,” said Christopher Robin.

* * * * *
So they went off together. But wherever they go, and whatever happens to them on the way, in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest a little boy and his Bear will always be playing. The anguish of Christopher Robin as he tries to explain his going away and the incomprehension of poor Pooh are beautifully human

Bored?

If you’re under 14: “Good.” It’s good that you’re feeling bored.
Bored is an actual feeling.
Bored can prompt forward motion. Bored is the thing that happens before you choose to entertain yourself. Bored is what empty space feels like, and you can use that empty space to go do something important. Bored means that you’re paying attention (no one is bored when they’re asleep.)

If you’re over 14: “It’s up to you.”

As soon as you’re tired of being bored at work, at home, on lockdown, wherever, you’ll go find a challenge. You don’t have to quit your day job to be challenged, but you do have to be willing to leap, to take some responsibility, to find something that might not work.

Being challenged at work is a privilege. It means that you have a chance, while being paid, to grow. It means you can choose to matter.

I’m glad you’re feeling bored, and now we’re excited to see what you’re going to go do about it.

Angelo on Corona

Social distancing

“Social distancing,” yes indeed. It’s basically what June and I consider ordinary life. We’re retired, we’re home a lot, and don’t have the energy to cope with huge events like concerts, parades, sport events and so on. We don’t go to pubs.

So we’re doing our part by basically keeping on keeping on. I’m working on techniques to avoid using my hands as much in public places. If I’m going through a door that simply pushes open, I push with my shoulder.  After I wash my hands in the gents, I dry them on a paper towel and then grip the door handle through the towel. I’m all for flattening the pandemic curve. What I don’t think is a good idea is flattening the economy. More here about this from David McWilliams.

So we’re wandering around the living room or the garden, reading, writing, working in the garden, pulling weeds, and so on. Life continues.
