I was
having lunch last week with a film director working in the entertainment and the advertising business. It was an interesting and wide ranging chat. One of the things
we discussed that stuck in my mind was the thought that future web and mobile apps
might behave more like TV shows than traditional software applications.
I've
watched my kids go from Atari to C64 to Doom to Facebook over the past years. And who knows what social app will be their "go to app" in three years. This has always been the case in videogames. FarmVille to Cityville
to something else. This journey from nothing to everything to nothing again is also true at some
level with many tech companies. Digital Equipment Corporation was founded in
1957 and closed in 1998. RIM was founded in 1984 and in all liklihood will
be gone before the end of this decade. Same with Sun Microsystems, Silicon
Graphics, Nokia and many more tech companies.
"If everyone had the luxury to pursue a life of exactly what they love, we would all be ranked as visionary and brilliant. … If you got to spend every day of your life doing what you love, you can’t help but be the best in the world at that. And you get to smile every day for doing so. And you’ll be working at it almost to the exclusion of personal hygiene, and your friends are knocking on your door, saying, “Don’t you need a vacation?!,” and you don’t even know what the word “vacation” means because what you’re doing is what you want to do and a vacation from that is anything but a vacation — that’s the state of mind of somebody who’s doing what others might call visionary and brilliant.”

Immer weiter, immer in Bewegung bleiben!
Conquering difficulties as you grow old.
Why is this so difficult for most people? because most of us were told in childhood that the way to conquer a difficulty is to fight it and demolish it. That theory is, of course, the one that should be taught to young people.
Many of the difficulties we encounter in youth are not permanent; and the combination of a heroic courage, a resolute will, and a tireless persistence will often — probably usually — break them down. But in later years the essential elements in the situation change. We find in our little world prison-walls which no amount of battering will demolish. Within those walls we must spend our day — spend them happily, or resentfully. Under these new circumstances we must deliberately reverse our youthful technique. We must gain victory, not by assaulting the walls, but by accepting them. Only when this surrender is made can we assure ourselves of inward quietness, and locate the next step on the road to ultimate victory.
“… great projects, like great careers and relationships that last, are gardens. They are tended, they shift, they grow. They endure over time, gaining a personality and reflecting their environment. When something dies or fades away, we prune, replant and grow again.”
- Seth Godin
